More than 40 countries are expected to participate in what officials describe as the first high-level gathering dedicated specifically to coordinated security efforts in the strait. The meeting comes amid heightened international concern over disruptions to shipping routes linked to the wider US-Iran conflict, which has affected a key global corridor for energy and fertilizer transport.
South Korean authorities recently concluded that an explosion and fire aboard the cargo ship HMM Namu on May 4 was caused by two unidentified airborne objects.
Seoul has strongly condemned the incident and stated that it will carry out a full investigation to determine responsibility for the attack.
