South Korea Takes Part in International Security Talks on Strait of Hormuz
(MENAFN) According to reports, South Korea is set to take part in a multinational defense ministerial meeting focused on maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz following a recent attack on a South Korean-operated cargo vessel in the strategic waterway.
Local media, citing government officials, reported that Army Maj. Gen. Woo Kyung-suk, director general for policy planning at the Defense Ministry, will attend the virtual meeting, which is being co-chaired by Britain and France.
More than 40 countries are expected to participate in what officials describe as the first high-level gathering dedicated specifically to coordinated security efforts in the strait. The meeting comes amid heightened international concern over disruptions to shipping routes linked to the wider US-Iran conflict, which has affected a key global corridor for energy and fertilizer transport.
South Korean authorities recently concluded that an explosion and fire aboard the cargo ship HMM Namu on May 4 was caused by two unidentified airborne objects.
Seoul has strongly condemned the incident and stated that it will carry out a full investigation to determine responsibility for the attack.
