Seoul Says Nuclear Weapons Is Off Table, Calls Policy Strategic Decision
In remarks published by regional leadership observers, Cho addressed speculation that South Korea’s efforts to modernize its nuclear fuel cycle and develop nuclear-powered submarines might indicate an intention to pursue nuclear arms or latent capabilities.
“There are voices that raise questions as to whether these efforts might signal an intention by the Republic of Korea to pursue nuclear weapons or to develop latent nuclear capabilities. Such questions remain marginal but warrant a clear and unequivocal response: Nothing could be further from the truth," he stated.
His clarification followed a trade agreement signed last November between South Korea and the United States, which includes a $150 billion Korean investment in the US shipbuilding sector, with Washington supporting Seoul’s pursuit of nuclear-powered submarines.
“Nuclear weapons alone cannot guarantee a nation’s security, nor can they ensure the well-being of its people. North Korea itself stands as the clearest proof of this fact,” Cho said.
The Korean Peninsula remains divided, with tensions persisting since the Korean Armistice Agreement ended the 1950-1953 conflict. North Korea has repeatedly affirmed that its nuclear capabilities are permanent.
“Upholding the nuclear non-proliferation treaty is not simply a matter of principle but a logical strategic imperative” for South Korea, Cho added.
