S. Korea's Ousted President Yoon Receives Life Sentence
The Seoul Central District Court convicted Yoon of acting as an "insurrection ringleader" and handed down a life sentence at the conclusion of the first trial, a South Korean news agency reported.
The ruling fell short of the most severe punishment available — prosecutors had pushed for the death penalty over Yoon's failed bid to place the country under martial law on the night of December 3, 2024.
The court also delivered heavy sentences to other key figures implicated in the episode. Former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun was handed a 30-year prison term, while former Intelligence Commander Noh Sang-won received 18 years for their respective roles in the aborted martial law declaration.
Yoon had been formally indicted in January 2025 on charges of leading an insurrection following his dramatic and ultimately unsuccessful declaration of martial law the previous month — a move that sent shockwaves through South Korea's political establishment and triggered a swift constitutional crisis.
