South Korea Moves to Discipline 180 Troops
The proposed steps involve disciplinary sanctions. The ministry disclosed the number after conducting a months-long inquiry into approximately 860 officers across 24 military commands and units who were allegedly connected to the enforcement of martial law, a news agency reported.
Over 100 officials drawn from the ministry, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and several branches of the armed forces were engaged in the investigation to assess how deeply individuals were involved.
The probe verified indications that the Defense Intelligence Command had prearranged a plan to assume control of the state-operated election oversight body. It also found that the Defense Counterintelligence Command, along with the ministry’s investigative headquarters, attempted to detain prominent political figures.
Beyond internal disciplinary proceedings, three generals and five colonels have been formally charged for their significant involvement in the unsuccessful martial law initiative.
“Following the announcement, we will firmly strive to rid the dishonor that has tainted the military and rebuild a military for the people,” Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back stated.
The ministry is additionally preparing supplementary investigations into accusations concerning the Defense Counterintelligence Command and the Defense Intelligence Command, whose classified responsibilities had previously constrained thorough examination.
